Healthcare digital spend is going up: where are you spending?
From Classrooms to Smartphones: Transforming NHS Staff Learning with Gamification
The UK government recently announced it would be making a huge investment into digital spend in the NHS. After three years of working closely with the NHS on the digitization of their learning and development, we’ve seen the impact of investments made in digital training systems and materials.
On the brink of this investment, is now the time to transform how you do healthcare training? What could that look like?
More engaged, successful participants
There are two significant difficulties with ‘traditional’ training methods (classroom-based or old-fashioned e-learning, for example).
Number one being that it’s challenging to get participants together under one roof in the first place. Taking whole teams of clinical staff out for an entire day is incredibly difficult. And if you do, you’ll always know their minds are likely elsewhere.
Number two is that you have no real way of knowing how much participants have really engaged with the sessions or retained what they’ve learned. We typically forget around 50% of what we’ve been told within the first hour of completing a session. If you’re training clinical staff on new equipment or systems, and they find themselves in a scenario that requires them to use it for six months, you have a problem.
How does digital training combat these challenges?
If you can implement a training system that can be done in small chunks on a mobile device, you solve a large part of the problem already. Clinical staff no longer need to spend entire shifts off wards. They can take control of their own learning from the palm of their hand at a time that suits them.
When you turn it into something gamified, you’re really on to something. Because suddenly you’ll not only be able to see when someone has completed the training, but also how they performed. Where are the gaps in their knowledge? Where do you need to add or change content?
But even better than that, your team will be able to repeat the content as often as they need. Eliminate the fear that new information will be forgotten. Whether it’s six days or six months since you released new technology, your team will have access to refresher training at their fingertips.
More aligned training content
Any healthcare training should be focused on improving patient care and maximizing operational efficiency.
But what’s relevant to a radiographer may not always be relevant to an anaesthetist. Digitized training gives you more flexibility and adaptability to really tailor training to every department in your healthcare organization.
Building more confident healthcare professionals
If you create more confident HCPs with improved digital literacy and more headspace to focus on patient care, this could create a positive ripple effect throughout your organization.
Investing in training systems that give new clinical context to training is game-changing. Teams can practice vital skills and processes in a safe environment, away from the fear of making potentially fatal mistakes.
From admission and triage to diagnosis and discharge, these real-life simulations offer practical and repeatable modules to aid knowledge retention and confidence.
Paving the way for digital transformation
Our experiences working with multiple NHS Trusts are serving as a blueprint for digital training solutions in healthcare. We’re excited to see what the future holds with this increased digital investment for the NHS. We believe it’s a real opportunity to provide HCPs with more personalization and the tools to achieve patent-centered outcomes.
